A major Teesside based company was experiencing significant pressures of operational compliance. Over a number of years training had been delivered in only a few area and only as a last thought. This area of the company was often regarded as last on the list of training priorities.

The training strategy developed for business provided a structure to challenge,

"what we do?",

"why we do it?",

"how we do it?" and

"how we evaluate it?".

The resulting analysis identified the key steps to achieve the business objectives:

Technician Training Toolboxes - Training delivered "on shifts" to satisfy basic skill requirements and provide a cost effective approach to training, for example Storage and transfer systems, Control Valves, Centrifugal Pump Operation, Tank management and Fault Finding, Instrumentation and Jetty operation etc..

Activity Based Learning - Modules developed for all the products in the Storage area to train and validate performance to a consistent level

Job Methods - Procedure development to provide a clear process for training and validation which explained 'how' and 'why' we do what we do.

Training for Assessors - to provide a quality verified process for the assessment / validation of competence to stand up to the rigours of the Industry regulators.

Management of NVQ - qualifications on behalf of the client to allow them to focus on their core activity

Project Management - of the training activities

The results have produced a completely structured technical training process that meets the business and regulator's requirements.

This has resulted in,

  • Shift technical toolboxes across the range of technical training
  • Over 50 activity based learning modules for 3 plants with assessment guides
  • Shift based assessors assessing some 300 plus job methods and ABLs
  • Numerous NVQ Units and awards for over 120 registered technicians
  • New validated plant induction process
  • Recording and tracking processes
  • New Effluent training programmes and procedures
